Philosophy at EMS

Children in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, generally 10-14 years of age, undergo profound changes in their physical, mental, intellectual, and social-emotional characteristics.

This distinctive period of human development, called transescence, is the bridge between childhood and adolescence. Through experience and scientific evidence, educators have come to realize that students in this age group are not adequately served by the typical self-contained organization of elementary schools nor by the fully departmentalized organization of high school.

The organization and program of the middle school, establishing smaller "schools within a school", provides an atmosphere which is less threatening, more nurturing, and supportive for each child. At Grand Blanc middle schools, this is accomplished through Teams. Each grade is divided into teams, both in location and procedure. In this middle school setting, the primary purposes are to ensure that each student:

  1. Develops and maintains a sense of personal worth and dignity
  2. Is accepting of others
  3. Becomes more self-reliant
  4. Develops a positive attitude toward learning
  5. Is helped to grow to the limits of his/her academic ability and interest

The academic programs of our middle schools build on the foundation of all basic skills established in elementary school. Developmental experiences in Mathematics, Language Arts, Reading, Science and Social Studies will comprise the basic curriculum for each student.

To complement these basic disciplines, a wide variety of exploratory opportunities designed to assist students in their physical and intellectual development will be provided. Exploratory experiences may include, but not be limited to, such subjects as Physical Education, Home Economics, Technical/Media Education, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, and Foreign Language.
